Virginia Range Section

The Virginia Range section hikes the extent of the Virginia Range from South Washoe Lake along the historic Ophir and Gieger Grades into Viringia City Nevada, then into the Long Valley and Lagomarsino Canyon Lands and onto the Truckee River at Lockwood Nevada.

South Washoe Lake to Virginia City

From the Lakeview Interchange hike left onto Duck Hill Road. Follow the road from up and along the ridgeline of the Virginia Range. Continue on the dirt road up to the Duck Hill Summit with views of Carson City, Washoe Lake and the Carson Range. Continue along the Virginia Range Rigdeline passing the Cinderlite Mine, McClellan Peak and the aqueduct terminus. The hike continues onto the historic Ophir Grade and into Virginia City. Virginia City offers many amenities and is wonderful place for a break on the trail.

Virginia City to Lockwood

From downtown Virgnia City hike on Cemertary Road through the cemetary main trail and follow the trail left at St. Mary's Cemetary Hike past the Sierra Nevada Mine and up Sevenmile Canyon back onto the Gieger Grade and then to Lousetown Road. Instead of following Lousetown Road right, head straight on the dirt road above Lousetown Road and hike it around Lousetown Road. Hike back onto Lousetown Road and follow it for about a half-mile then head unto the unpaved Victoria Road, then go left Barrel Spring Road, right onto Overland Road. From Overland Road continue hiking on a road to the right the passes along side Dry Lake. Follow this road to the top of Dry Lake Pass and hike the road to the left heading into Langomarsino Canyon. There water available here at Long Valley Creek. Hike past the Lagomarsino Petroglyphs taking the road up and around to the right and back toward the Canyon, however continue along the dirt road above and along-side, following the canyon. Continue hiking along this road with views of the canyon and eventually views of Mt. Washington Quarry, then onto the paved road Canyon Way and head right continuing out of Lagomarsino Canyon to Lockwood Nevada. Lockwood Nevada features a Lockwodd Market and camping alongside the Truckee River. The Lockwood Trailhead is maintained by Washoe County Parks and features restrooms, tables and parking spaces. It's consider a good fishing spot.
